Kindred spirit

Students, faculty, staff and alumni recently got an “Inside the Beltway” glimpse of America’s political system courtesy of famed commentator and trailblazing female broadcaster Cokie Roberts, the 2012 speaker in the Gloria Shatto Lecture Series.

In her remarks, Roberts discussed the partisan nature of contemporary politics and the ongoing presidential race. She also found time to offer praise for the woman who founded the institution at which she was speaking, Martha Berry.

“It’s wonderful to be in an institution founded by a feisty woman,” Roberts stated. “When I read up on her and realized what she did when she did it, it is really incredible, because at the end of the 19th century [and] beginning of the 20th century, of course, she didn’t have the right to vote.”
