Georgia Traveler: Berry College SegmentViewers of Georgia Public Broadcasting got a crash course in all things Berry during the November episode of Georgia Traveler. Featured landmarks in the “Coolest Campus” segment included Oak Hill and the Ford Buildings. GPB also highlighted Berry’s Hollywood connections, as well as the campus dairy and associated student-operated enterprises. The tone of the piece was so very Berry that an oft-repeated bit of campus hyperbole found its way into the narrative (the deer-to-student ratio is much closer to 1-to-1 than the 7-to-1 reported). For 37 years, Charlie Hood (69C) was the face of boys basketball at Marietta (Ga.) High School, coaching the Blue Devils to 715 victories, 20 state tournament appearances and two state championships. Recently, Marietta recognized his achievements by naming its basketball court in his honor. Among those on hand for the Nov. 17 ceremony was former NBA standout Dale Ellis, one of the 60-plus Marietta players who went on to play college basketball during Charlie’s tenure.

“It is truly a great honor,” the retired coach told the Marietta Daily Journal. “The floor might say ‘Charlie Hood,’ but there are a lot of players and coaches who were responsible for that.”

Before making history at Marietta, Charlie was a basketball standout at Berry, helping the Vikings post a 23-8 record his senior year. More.
