Berry Alumni in the Arts

Brenna Conley (12C), left, and Allen Bell (95C)

An inventive retelling of a very old story landed Brenna Conley (12C) on the short list of finalists for the 2013 Paris Literary Prize. Protection, Brenna’s novella about the Greek goddess Persephone, was one of only seven works to be so honored. Originally written as her Honors thesis at Berry, the work was submitted for recognition by Honors Program Director and Associate Professor of Communication Brian Carroll.

At the same time Brenna was being lauded for her future promise, Allen Bell (95C) was rewarded for lifetime achievement by the Georgia Arts Network. Allen, a 15-year veteran of arts administration, currently serves as program director for arts education, research and information at South Arts, a regional organization based in Atlanta. In 2001, he was honored with Berry’s Outstanding Young Alumni Award.

Joining Berry in the top four were Temple University, Syracuse University and Northwestern University.

“This is pretty good company to keep,” Carroll stated. “I’m so proud of the students’ hustle and commitment in producing the series.”
