Alumni Weekend PromoGood food? Yes!

Familiar faces? Absolutely!

Fun times? We guarantee it!

Berry’s annual Alumni Weekend and Young Alumni Weekend celebrations promise all of the above and more. The only thing missing is you!

This year’s events will be held Friday, May 30, through Sunday, June 1, with Alumni Work Week beginning immediately afterward and continuing through June 6. Click the links for details on each and to register online. The deadline is Friday, May 16, so please don’t delay.

Highlights this year include 11 different class reunion dinners on Friday, May 30, and an expanded alumni gala the following evening at the Forum in Rome. Reunions are scheduled for the college and high school/academy classes of 1949, 1954, 1959, 1964 and 1969 as well as the college class of 1961. Reunion dinner schedule and pricing.

The expanded gala promises to be an unforgettable tribute to Berry’s past and future, with several special recognitions scheduled. These include the induction of college and academy alumni from the class of 1964 into the Golden Guard and the presentation of the 2014 Distinguished Alumni Awards to the following recipients:

Rayford Boyett (58C), Distinguished Achievement
John Shahan (64A, 69C)
, Distinguished Service
Andreas Economopoulos (97C)
, Entrepreneurial Spirit
Heather Henderson-Keller (03C)
, Outstanding Young Alumni

In addition, two longtime faculty members – Dana Professor of Government and International Studies Peter Lawler and Provost and Professor of Communication Kathy Richardson – will be welcomed as honorary alumni. Receptions for young alumni and Golden Guard members will precede the dinner, and an evening of dancing will follow the official program.

Other events you don’t want to miss include the Friday morning golf scramble, Saturday’s “behind-the-ropes” tour of Oak Hill and The Martha Berry Museum, and Sunday’s worship services. Events specific to young alumni include a Friday night gathering at Schroeder’s on Broad Street, a Saturday morning campus service project, and opportunities to take advantage of recreation and fitness facilities in the Cage Center on Saturday afternoon.

Okay all of you procrastinators out there, time is running out to register for the many special events scheduled for Mountain Day. Next Saturday, Oct. 5, thousands of your fellow alumni will gather on the slopes of Lavender Mountain for the annual celebration of Martha Berry’s birthday. A full schedule and registration details can be found on the alumni relations website. Advance registration closes Oct. 2, so don’t miss out!

Highlights this year include a special tribute to Berry’s historic high schools – the Mount Berry School for Boys, Martha Berry School for Girls and Berry Academy. A reception and dinner will be held Friday, Oct. 4, with other high school-themed events to follow on Saturday. Of particular note is the roll out of A History of the Berry Schools on the Mountain Campus, a much-anticipated book about the high schools written by Dr. Jennifer Dickey (77A, 81C). Copies will be available for purchase throughout the weekend. Jennifer’s sister and fellow academy alumna Angela Dickey (75A, 79C) will be the featured speaker at Saturday morning’s Mountain Day Convocation in Frost Chapel. Angela is the 2013 recipient of the Berry Alumni Association’s Distinguished Achievement Award. High school celebration.

Also on tap is the sixth-annual Mega Reunion, this year hosting alumni from the college and academy classes of 1973, 1978, 1983, 1988, 1993, 1998, 2003 and 2008. The fun gets under way at 5 p.m. Saturday on the grounds of Oak Hill and The Martha Berry Museum. Information and registration.

Other events of note include Friday afternoon’s Golf Scramble, Saturday morning’s 5K (this year benefitting Berry’s planned athletic stadium, Valhalla) and, of course, Saturday afternoon’s picnic lunch and Grand March. While you’re on the mountain, don’t forget to check out the many products available from Berry College Student Enterprises.

If you can’t join us in person, we’re pleased to once again offer a Virtual Mountain Day experience featuring streaming video of the Grand March and a live chat function accessible to anyone with a Twitter account. Be sure to include the hash tag #mtnday13 in your tweets.

Alumni Weekend is a memorable experience for all involved, but as the newest inductees in Berry’s Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame, John W. Coleman (04C), Amy Moskovitz Williams (03C) and Thomas Ray Fewell (58C) found it truly unforgettable.

John, a published author who recently completed both his MBA and MPA from Harvard University, was honored with this year’s Outstanding Young Alumni Award. Amy, wife of 2010 Outstanding Young Alumnus Michael D. Williams (03C), claimed the Distinguished Service Award for her commitment to global volunteerism in the area of public health. Ray, meanwhile, took home the Distinguished Achievement Award in recognition of his considerable accomplishments as a physicist and innovator in radiation measurement. He is the seventh member of his college class to win a Distinguished Alumni Award (and the third to be honored for Distinguished Achievement). You can read more about this amazing class in the fall issue of Berry magazine.

John, Amy and Ray were recognized during a May 18 gala that also featured Golden Guard inductions for the high school and college classes of 1962. Representatives of those two classes, Bob Williams (62H) and Yoniece Miller (62C), had the special honor of presenting a combined gift of more than $3 million to Berry from the high school, academy and college classes that celebrated reunions during Alumni Weekend 2012 and Mountain Day 2011.

The Friday night gala set the stage for a full weekend of reunion activities attended by nearly 500 alumni and friends.
